Potential Implant Pitfalls
and How to avoid them!
Dental Implants when placed correctly – with skill, diligence and care, are the best replacement by far for lost teeth. They look and feel so natural you may sometimes forget you chose them. They stop teeth moving into gaps and bone being lost where the tooth originally was.
When carefully designed & correctly placed and maintained they last many years, often a lifetime. So what’s the difference between investing in great implants that leave you feeling proud to have your smile back and having a less than ideal experience?
If you are interested in dental implants and want to discuss your case with Gerry, our implantologist, arrange a 30 minute consultation for £45 (available for a limited period).
Book Now1. Will the dentist make sure my mouth is truly ready for Implants?
The key factor alongside their skill – is ensuring your oral hygiene is tip top and any necessary other dental treatment has been provided before you have your new teeth.
Your mouth simply has to be healthy before you have implant placement, otherwise you are unnecessarily risking infection after the placement surgery or risk the healing of the new bone around the implant(s) failing.
Several preparation visits tend to be needed before your mouth is in good shape and ready. Visits abroad of course for implants are laden with these potential risks of your mouth not being ready for implants.
2. Will my Implants be well cared for after they are placed?
Excellent after implant care often makes the difference between Implants taking well and healing after placement and being assimilated seamlessly by the body or not.
Make sure the Implant Dentist is – being a highly trained ‘Implantologist’ – available for you after the placement. Also, the dental hygienist should have the latest and gentlest specialist Implant cleaning technology. This helps to avoid scratching the titanium, where plaque bacteria can thrive, attacking the bond of the implant to your bone.
Implants need reviewing regularly post placement especially in the first 3-6 months of the fitting process – then expertly cleaned & checked every 3-4 months by a well trained hygienist (who knows implants) to ensure potential problems are avoided or rapidly nipped in the bud.
Again going abroad makes it very hard to regularly & thus carefully monitor implants after placement.
3. How skilled/expert is the dentist at Implants?
Look for how many years experience the dentist has and their specific qualifications. They should ideally have a Degree in Dental Implantology and Oral Surgery – like Dr. Gerry Van Deventer.
Everyone’s bite and jaws are different. The shape of your jaw, the bone depth, where the nerves are within it are just some of the important considerations when these modern marvels are designed & placed.
The choice of implant, the design of the crown/bridge/denture on top and the angle and position of placement (to resist your jaw’s individual biting forces) are vital to implants lasting and helping, not hindering your bite.
Your Implantologist needs to have the experience to make your bite better and avoid potential pitfalls, such as headaches or TMJ problems!
Gerry’s friendly professional expertise in implants dates back to 2008. He is a specialist focusing only on Implants and Oral Surgery. He has successfully placed 1000’s of Implants over two decades of ongoing study and experience. With him you are truly in safe and expert hands.
4. What type of titanium implant technology are they providing and who makes the crown or denture?
Cheaper dental implant manufactures often don’t have great research and development budgets to create quality design and manufacturing – so they are not all the same. Quality implants that provide a permanent, stable foundation for missing teeth include those manufactured by Straumann – Gerry’s favourite Implant system. With their 56 years of research and innovation, they are a truly safe and reliable option and not overpriced.
Gerry’s dental implant technician uses easier to clean and thus maintain Implant Crown/Bridge/Denture design with their most durable and beautiful new teeth. Other Cheap, headline deals unfortunately may not afford the long lasting, most aesthetic and most effective new teeth for chewing and biting that you so deserve.
5. Is my present jaw bone thick enough?
Over the years after losing a tooth the bone falls away – taken up by your body. Some implant dentists may cut corners or take risks with shorter, less secure implants when your bone is on the thin side rather than build up your jaw.
Gerry augments your bone when needed, months before the final titanium implant placement. This ensures your implants are securely held by your bone and able to comfortably resist the large biting forces we all have.
6. Do it once-do it right!
This is the best way to get value for money for tooth replacements. We take care to keep our high quality, expertly placed and maintained implants relatively affordable.
True value is in the many years of confident smiling, eating your favourite foods without worry and improving your oral and general health. Implants when safely placed are perhaps the most secure health and happiness choice you can make.
Catchy cheap deals either abroad or at home may well have significant risks and pitfalls, and not provide the supporting treatments to safely secure your lasting implant health. Are they really worth the risk?
7. Are they respectful, understanding & versatile Dental Implant Providers who put you & your needs first?
One size never fits all with dental implants – Your needs, expectations and budget is individual to you. We take care to ensure your Implant Plan is individually tailored to meet your needs.
We take the time to explain its strengths and limitations (if there are any.) Your implant journey needs to be carefully designed & planned for YOU!
The process and your options need to be clearly explained before you go ahead, so you are empowered to choose the most suitable implant option for both your mouth and your wallet.
For instance, a varying number of implants may be chosen to act as a root for a single tooth, bridge, or denture. This also depends on the condition of your jaw bone and if you need augmentation or other pre-treatments.
